VoterBuzz™ Information/Blog Section!
What better way to kick off my new VoterBuzz blog than to share the story of how VoterBuzz came to be?
It all started one evening in May 2011, while I was relaxing at home. I was settled into my job as operations coordinator and database manager for a small yet successful political consulting firm in Florida. While watching television, I began looking through the app store on my iPhone for an app geared specifically for politics. I found a couple, but nothing that satisfied all of my needs: something that could serve both “the little guy” and “the big dogs,” something that allowed a lot of campaigns and organizations to show up in one place and utilize grassroots tools, something that would enable me to get all the news and events I wanted to without checking out 10 different websites or downloading 10 different apps.
I thought, “What about Facebook?” But even Facebook didn’t offer the tools I was looking for. And its privacy settings didn’t allow me the discreetness I wanted. What if I wanted to follow people I don’t care for, just to see what they’re doing? Did I really want all of my friends and family to think I was following those groups and people because I agreed with them? No, I didn’t.
That’s when I grabbed a pen and notepad and started laying out all of the basics I wanted to see in what I’d call the ideal political app. My goal was to couple grassroots campaigning with new mobile technology. To utilize all that smartphones have to offer on behalf of the average voter. To give campaigns direct access to voters via a tool they carry around with them everywhere.
And by that, I mean everywhere! Let’s face it: most of us even take our phones with us to the bathroom. We can’t miss a call, a text, an update, a tweet, or our turn to move on WWF…Words With Friends. I know, I know, you knew what I meant.
So here we are, less than one year later and VoterBuzz is a reality. It is everything I imagined it to be and more. And I know it hasn’t even reached its full potential yet.
Until next time…
Andrea Torkelson
